MARUYAMA Tokio Artist's statement
- I feel the world is in a fragile state, and in danger of suffering from "IndifferenceÅh and "ForgetfulnessÅh. So I think that the world should maintain vigilant "InterestÅhand "RememberÅhwhat has happened in the past. For that reason, I started examining the present situation. In becoming aware of the fixed ideas we have towards objects and phenomena, we can analyze their values of each object and phenomena compare them. Each of these things have their position in our society. In short, the fixed ideas we have has warped our present sense of value. By realizing this we can make adjustments, and take interest in things. It will help us remember that the present has been handed down to us from the past. Investigating how human thoughts shifts and changes would not be unlike a journey to make one aware of numerous fragmental phenomena that seem to have no connection between them, although in fact they are all connected with each other. These movements all have meanings in the actions themselves. The most important thing is the process of advancing towards something, not necessarily reaching a destination.
A performance has the same motivation as the previously mentioned concept. A performer is aware of what has been performed, what is being performed, and what he wants to express by always being conscious of what he is performing at each moment. So, each movement of a performer will be focused on each moment, and which will be connected to his next movement. This way of performing allows the audience to observe the development of changes that occur at every moment. Therefore it is not just body movements that bring the action of every moment into focus. This makes the audience conscious of the present, future and the past. My hope is that as a result of the performance, it will encourage your interest and help you to remember to become aware of our present state. You will recognize the place we live, in our imaginations, that can lead us to rebuild a better world.
